COMPANY HISTORY

Terry Roberts left the Royal Navy in 1970 having served ten years in the communications branch. He commenced trading in metal in the late 1970's investing profits into property in the 1980's.

In 1982 he recognized that a general downturn in trade was beginning to take place in West Midlands industry. Whilst continuing his trading business, in 1982 he purchased 30 percent, later increased to 45 percent, of Derbyford Ltd., a precious metal refinery in Hatton Garden. During this time he gained a sound knowledge of precious metals and their uses in both industry and research. By 1985 he had recognized that higher profits were attainable through selling manufactured items to research laboratories rather than supplying raw metal. Accordingly he formulated a strategy to develop a business requiring a small number of staff, to manufacture high value products, which would not be dependent on the level of prosperity of West Midlands companies or any specific areas of industry.

In 1987 he began to purchase suitable equipment and machinery for the manufacture of platinum and other precious metal products. BMC was formed in 1988 to manufacture and supply precious metal products for industrial and research applications, principally using platinum group metals. Terry Roberts was determined to have an impact on the platinum business, and was in a position to invest private capital to support his intention. Because of his previous successful business background he has been in a position to reinvest all profits back into the business, and has not taken any salary or dividends from the Company since its inception. By 1994 he had established BMC's position in the precious metals market and attained ISO 9000 International Quality Control Certification.

By 1996 BMC had gained major customers such as Courtaulds plc, British Steel plc, British Ceramic Research Association, Cookson plc, Hepworth, plc and Oxford Onstruments plc as well as maintaining a growing relationship with smaller customers, universities and research establishments.

Following re-organization by Johnson Matthey, in 1993 the Company recruited one f its senior salesmen and in 1995 two of its experienced technical personnel, and in January 1996 its production manager became a consultant to the Company. The Company has benefited from the valuable expertise of these executives and has increased the customer base and added value to the product by improving systems and quality.
